The New Face of Facing Winter

A Brighter Side of the Forest

Justin Birchard and Jeff Goluszka of Facing Winter are two of the most genuine, caring, and special people I've been lucky enough to call friends. We have all gone through a shocking and hurtful time together, but are prevailing in our own paths of life. With our friendship renewed, and the replacement of their old bassist with their current one - Drew DeWaard - I've again become a part of the boys' musical journey as a fan and photographer.

I have been very privileged to have the new Facing Winter preview some of their latest material, along with some old favorites. Drew has exceeded my hopes for the band's rebirth - helping land opening gigs for bands like Rusted Root, and playing larger venues than before. They're continuing to pursue their desire to play cities outside of Chicago, and are doing so tactically and with more determination than ever before. Together, this new grouping has already begun exploring new avenues of musicality - evidence of which will be seen on their forthcoming album due for completion in just a few short weeks.

So... without further ado, here is the new face of Facing Winter:

A Solo Performance

Alex gave an unforgettable and beautiful show on Sunday, February 28th at Steinway of Chicago in Downers Grove, IL. His program included:

Alex filled the performance room beyond capacity - something that had never been done at Steinway of Chicago by any other performer. He earned a standing ovation from his impeccable technique and interpretation of these intricate pieces. The performance reminded me of how truly lucky and blessed I am to have Alex as my piano teacher.

Another Session With Carole

Carole and I decided to work on a little bit of studio photos for her modeling portfolio. I've had some damask fabric in my office for over a year now that I've been meaning to use for a shoot, and finally figured out the perfect reason to use it! :)

We'll be doing a few more shoots together, and I'll keep be sure to keep everyone filled in on what becomes of this lovely lady's modeling career.

A Day of Fun in the Music Studios

I met Niki a bit more than a year ago when she and her now husband, Phil, asked me to be their wedding photographer. Since that time, Niki has kept in touch with me, and asked me if I would take some time out to do a photo shoot with her.

How could I resist?

She had her family friends, Patti and Alicia, come out for the day to help me with Niki's fashion, makeup and hair styling (among other things - thanks for the wine, fruit, and chips & salsa ladies!). The four of us laughed a lot, and HOPEFULLY helped this beautiful girl realize how lovely she is.

Alexander Djordjevic and Brenda Huang

A couple of weekends ago, my piano teacher, Alexander Djordjevic, played a four hand piano piece with pianist Brenda Huang in Chicago for the Pianoforte Foundation. Combined with the setting, acoustics, and appreciative audience, these two beautifully performed Schubert's Divertimento for 4 hands in G Minor, Op. 54, D. 818, "À l'hongroise." It was truly a treat, as always, to get to hear Alex perform, and even more so alongside such a talented performer as Ms. Huang.

The Grammys
Chicago Chapter Viewing Party

I thought I'd wait until this posting to make the official announcement that I am now a member of The Recording Academy - yes, the Grammys. After the past two years of invitations to attend several parties held by the organization, I was asked why I wasn't a member by my friend Pete (the current president of the Chicago chapter). I told him that I didn't know I could be; that I thought I had to be a professional musician. He explained that due to my involvement in the music community, I was indeed eligible. He also briefly explained to me the differences in memberships. With that, I am currently only an associate member, but am working on my credentials in order to be a voting member.

I have met so many wonderful people, and have gained so much knowledge on the industry because of this organization. I know that there are many different opinions regarding The Academy, but there are many things that they/we do in and for the music community that are so great. One of my favorites is Musicares. Check it out!!!

This year's party was a lot of fun for me, although I did miss some of my friends who either had recording stuff to attend to, or were attending the event in other cities. Here's a peak into our evening in Chicago:

Saturday night was a fun one! My friends had a CD release party for their band, Cobia, at Austin's Fuel Room in Libertyville, IL. If you remember, Cobia is one of the bands that I'd worked with this past year on promo and CD photos. Since our shoot together, the guys have become dear friends of mine. To see their audience fill the room really brought a smile to my face.

At the show, I also met/made some news friends from the band, Heart Set Self Destruct. I'll be working with these guys in the very near future on some photos for their upcoming release! I also have a photo shoot or two planned with Dave's (lead singer) beautiful girlfriend, Carole.

After the show, we all headed out to an after party to unwind and enjoy a successful show. Boys, THANK YOU for being such wonderful friends. I'm so excited and happy to continue to work with you, and also to call you each friends. See you soon!

NAMM
Anaheim, California

Over the weekend, I went to Anaheim, CA with my wonderful friend Sarah for the NAMM Convention. [A brief history on this acronym - NAMM used to stand for the National Association of Music Merchants, but now has expanded globally, and so therefore has changed to the International Music Products Association. The acronym, NAMM, was kept, however]. This essentially invite-only convention features the latest instruments, music hardware, software and other related items for people in the music industry to check out. While at this event, it is expected to see so many of music's most talented performers checking things out, signing a few autographs, and taking some pictures at random.

After the convention hours, it's party time! Sarah and I had a LOT of fun with this part of the day, and spent some time with some of the industry's well known people - we had dinner with a few of them, took some pictures with them and others along the way, and of course threw in the random shot of tequilla to solidify the good time being had (OUCH!!! My esophagus STILL hurts just thinking about that!).

Anyway, here's a peak at our weekend of music and networking.

My second cousin is just plain awesome! She's incredibly sweet, very funny, and a wonderful mother of three beautiful children (who have the cutest itty bitty voices!). Jennifer had me come by her home to hang out with everyone for a little while, and snap a few pictures. We played with some play-doh, had a bit of a dress up session, and even had the kids take a picture with their dad when he came home from work.

My cousin Jennifer is also a Lia Sophia jewelry consultant, in case anyone is interested! She has lots of special events and offers going on all the time, so feel free to contact her!!

A Musician's Gathering

Chopin used to have gatherings held at his house. Invited were musicians, poets, writers, artists and all kinds of other artistic types of people. I decided to try just the musician part of this for the first gathering, and invited some of my dearest friends (and their friends) over for a night of music, food and drink.

Many smiles were had, great music was played and listened to, and hugs were endless. Thank you EVERYONE for coming out. You made me SO happy!!!

Saturday, I was given the opportunity to work with an insanely talented group of guys who form the band, The Effects (Lead singer - Joel; Guitarist - Jeff; Drummer - Aaron; Bassist - Chase). We met up at Groovemaster Studios (owned and run by the infamous Johnny K) to use this amazing space for our shoot together.

After the shoot, the band went to load in and do a sound check over at Bottom Lounge. I, along with David Silbaugh, his beautiful fiance Stacia, and Johnny's fabulous assistant Crystal, stayed behind and listened to some of Johnny's latest work (VERY neat stuff!!!). We all then made our way to the lounge in time for the show's start. The guys REALLY impressed the crap out of me with their playing! I can't wait to see them again when they come back into town :)

AND.... we'll also, hopefully, have the time to set up a more elaborate shoot (this one was put together on the fly).

Joel, Jeff, Aaron and Chase - THANK YOU for the fabulous shoot and amazing show.

Crystal - couldn't have done the shoot without you - you're just plain awesome!!!

Saw Trent Reznor perform on his last tour ever with NIN… and cried a tear with Sara and Carly
Matched all of my clean socks without having any left over
Was woken up to sand-papery kisses on my cheek from my kitten
Saw the ballet for the first time!

Prince or Frog?

Boyle's Christmas gift to me (he's the pilot for WGN) this year was a magical snowball that was to either grant me the prince of my dreams, or a frog. He said this magical ball of 'snow' was much like the groundhog's shadow; in the event that I got a frog, I would surely meet my prince in six weeks. Well... that's yet to be seen...

Adventures in Nashville
with Sarah and Christine :)

My beautiful friend Sarah, and her lovely roommate (and my NEWEST friend!!!) went on a road trip with me to Nashville over the weekend. We all had the most amazing time while there!!

We started by checking into our beautiful 4-1/2 star hotel called the Hutton. It's a green hotel, so it limits use of water, electricity, and waste. Sadly, this also meant no pool or hot tub, but we managed just fine!

The three of us went to a holiday party after having dinner at the swank Palm restaurant in town, and met Sarah's talented and sweet friend, Keith. While we had possibly a bit too many cocktails and glasses of wine, we sang songs (and created our own) into the wee hours of the night. What a way to spend your first time ever (that'd be me) in Nashville!!!

Saturday was spent shopping, resting, and going to BB King's club. The live music there was so fabulous! These musicians really were top notch. Sarah mentioned the club's strict policy on their in house musicians (i.e. they REALLY have to be talented).

The remainder of the evening was spent in our hotel watching Julie & Julia, snacking on homemade chips from the hotel kitchen, and fighting sleepy eyes. The morning meant a quick breakfast at the Pancake Pantry with Sarah's friend John Sepetys, and a quick meeting over coffee with one of my new and talented friends, Mikky Ekko.

Several hours, a few potty breaks, three cups of coffee, road snacks, and back seat naps later, we made it back to my place. The girls still had about an hour and a half left to go before they reached their home in Milwaukee, WI. They made it home safely, as did I after driving to pick up my kitty, Leala, from my wonderful friends' (Josh + Helen) house - they cat sat the grouchy little girl!

Beautiful Shannon has taught us all about strength, love, and life. She left this world peacefully in her sleep over the weekend, and is no longer suffering from her battle with brain cancer. Her loving husband, John, has shown everyone what love is and SHOULD be. What an amazing story theirs has been. I know I shall carry it with me always.

Grandma's Birthday Weekend

December 5th & 6th, 2009

Last weekend, we spent our third annual birthday weekend with my truly special/awesome/caring/beautiful/fabulous... I'm cutting myself off, because I'd forever write adjectives describing my grandmother. Our two day girls-only outing started with a trip to the imax in Batavia, IL to see A Christmas Carol in 3-D. I was definitely impressed - what a neat experience!

We then headed up north to Twin Lakes, Wisconsin to spend the night at a family friend's cottage. Dinner was had at a quaint little restaurant in town, and featured lots of yummy seafood. The rest of the evening was spent painting glasses and watching a few good chick flicks. Perfect end to the day.

Sunday, we woke up and made our coffee sans coffee pot - THAT was a bit of an adventure in itself. The coffee was great, nevertheless, and us girls headed off to the Jelly Belly factory for our free tour and some Jelly Belly jelly beans. They had some really awesome (and some not so awesome) flavored beans, and allow free sampling at their sample 'bar.' I only tried three at the factory, and only ate 8 beans total by the time were were back on the road. Pretty proud of myself!

After the factory tour, we grabbed a quick lunch, then headed off to the mall - what girls weekend would be complete without shopping? :)

Anyway, Grandma, I hope you had a wonderful birthday weekend. I had a fabulous time, and will definitely carry the memories with me always.

Yesterday morning, I visited Cheryl and Jim's two week old little boy, Mitchel. Cheryl is my friend, hair stylist, and soon to be personal trainer/nutritionist (yay!!). Jim, her husband, has been one of my pilots over at the hangar where I fly for the news.

Well, I finally made it downtown to see the gallery. I had a whopping 11 visitors all day (WE CAN DO BETTER!!! PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD!!) while running the place. Greg, Violet, Lily, and Baby On Board

Yesterday, I had a fabulous time visiting with Greg, Violet and Lily. We had done a larger family session earlier this year, but this time it was just the three of them. The shoot was at Grandma Judy's house (I LOVE her!!!), and I brought along my little 'set' that I created for my girls night a few weekeneds ago. Judy was so sweet - she offered me fresh coffee and delicious homemade biscotti while we had our photo session :)

Lily was so cute and so well behaved during the shoot. She LOVES to smile, and was very happy to do so yesterday. She even had a clothing change for the photos!

After our shoot, I found myself with such great company, that I stayed and chatted with everyone for a while. I believe I've found some more wine tasting buddies, and may even be able to convince Judy to come with me to Napa!! Of course, I'm pretty sure that everyone else will also be joining us too :)

We were fortunate to have gotten lovely weather today, as I met Joe and Sarah for yet another photoshoot, but this time with their entire family/family to be. We had our shoot at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, IL. Many of you know and recognize that name as one of the top courses in the country. It is often used for PGA events, and is just a unique and lovely place.

We primarily took todays photos outdoors, but also managed to capture a few neat shots inside the beautiful clubhouse.

After our session, Joe's father, Mike, invited me to join the family for lunch (thank you so much again, btw!!). What a great time!! And now I've got some ways to make Joe and Sarah laugh for their wedding day photos!!!

Last year, lots of people helped me put together a benefit concert in honor of Shannon Sperando. I took a mini road trip to Milwaukee today to spend time with the fabulous Sarah :) We took her adorable little Chihuahua, Carlo, to downtown Milwaukee for a photoshoot that Sarah wanted for this year's Christmas cards that she'll be sending out. We ended our shoot with a trip through the drive through at Starbucks - Carlo's favorite!!

I also wanted to share with you all these beautiful pepper mills that Sarah hand painted. She gave me one of them as a thank you for today's shoot (the other was one that I had already ordered as a gift).

Andrew Belle

Last night, I took the opportunity to see Andrew Belle perform live at one of my favorite spots in Chicago, Uncommon Ground. It's a special little place where quite a few well known performers have dropped in to play over the years, including one of my absolute favorites, Jeff Buckley.

Before Andrew started, Kailin Garrity performed her music, and some 70's classics, for the small and very crowded back room of this charming little place. She had quite a set of pipes on her, and a wonderful energy about her. Her smiling and enthusiasm rubbed off on the audience, and a tone was set from her performance.

Andrew's turn was up. Andrew shared the incredibly limited "stage" with his friends in music, and I shared the incredibly limited (in fact, almost non-existant) walking space with his sister, Maggie, as we both snapped photos while Andrew played his music.

In addition to this special performance, Andrew treated his fans with an opportunity to pick up his yet to be released new album. Well... me being a sucker for his music since hearing it over at Uptown Recording for the first time, I picked up a copy. Today, I got to spend time with Jami, Tony, Sydney and Mason. I last spent time with Jami and Sydney when Jami was still pregnant with Mason. When she asked me to come back to photograph her entire family, I couldn't wait! We had so much fun on our first shoot together, and today was much the same. We're hoping to even make some snow angels this winter!!

I had a great time with the girls at my place on Saturday. We had a Lia Sophia party with Tina, massages with Shelly, and a photo 'booth' that my friend Sara helped me build. Of course, no party could be complete without food, some wine, and lots of laughing :)

California!

November 7-10, 2009

Over the weekend, I went to Irvine, CA to visit a dear friend of mine, Mark. While I was there, I was very lucky to also get to visit my fabulous friend, Jane :)

I was able to visit Laguna Beach, L.A., Irvine, and Tamecula (YAY WINERIES!!), and LOVED every second of it. California is definitely somewhere I will definitely be revisiting as often as possible, and possibly even relocating to someday... we'll see!

Anyway, thank you Mark for your hospitality and wonderful friendship, and Jane for the wonderful memories, and smiles! Hope to see you both again very soon!

Adventures in Chicago With Shannon
Another adieu to my fabulous friend

My friend Shannon is leaving me yet again, this time after returning to Chicago from NYC. He'll be embarking on a journey to L.A. this time. Butthead. That's okay. I'm not bitter ;)

Anyway, we spent the day downtown goofing off with my camera, and trying a few new things like Doug's Dogs and The Silver Palm (I'd been there before, but Shannon HAD to try the three little pigs sandwich, since Anthony Bourdain on the Travel Network declared it the best sandwich in the counrty).

We returned to my humble abode and created my first ever fire in my apartment's fireplace. My Bengal cat, Leala, was fascinated by this new phenomenon :)

So to one of my best friends, I bid you a tearless adieu, since I know that you'll be seeing much of me - warm weather is far too tempting for me to NOT visit you (and there are LOTS of fabulous friends of mine in L.A. in addition). Love you oodles!

I met with Melissa, Dave and their children again today for another neat shoot - this time in a really old cemetery. This afternoon, I spent a bit of time with Joe and Sarah at Cantigny. Joe and I went to the same grade school and high school, and became reconnected when he proposed to his lovely fiance. We had a fantastic time roaming the grounds of the park, playing in leaves, and just laughing while we snapped a few photos.

After working with them today, I can already tell that their wedding is going to be a lot of fun and memorable. I'm very much looking forward to the wedding, you two!! Hope to see you before then, of course!

Jorge & Jessica

Their Wedding Day

While today's wedding was on Halloween, there were really very few parts of the wedding that had to do with the holiday - much of the decor had a fall theme to it, including the gorgeous flowers. Today was the first time that I got to meet Jorge and Jessica in person, as they were incredibly trusting in our friend Gillian's referral to use me as their photographer. I cannot express how incredibly thrilled I am that they asked me to photograph their special day.

It was unique from start to finish. We began by having the happy couple see each other before the ceremony in order to take as many photographs as possible with Jorge, Jessica and their bridal party. Their ceremony had special touches, including apples lining the aisles and decorating the tables in the front of the ceremony location. They served brisket, pork chops, mac and cheese, and a whole bunch of other yummy 'comfort' foods for dinner (and I have to say, I encourage EVERYONE to do something like this for their wedding!), and cupcakes for dessert.

The part that got me? I didn't even have to ask these two to be goofy - they climbed into a bathtub AND a shower and posed for a few photos. Jorge and Jessica invited my assistant, Megan, and I stayed a little while after we were supposed to leave, so... we did :)

What a treat it was to end my 2009 wedding season with this wedding. Jorge and Jessica, I wish you all the happiness in the world in your new life together. I also hope to see more of you both in the future :) Congratulations!!

Children's Memorial Hospital

Last Friday, I had the great pleasure of attending a charity event for the Children's Memorial Hospital. I was asked by my friend and former client, Matt (his beautiful wife, Stacey, was also at the event) to donate my time to photograph the event. Much money was raised through live and silent auctions, along with other fundraisers for such a fantastic cause.

This event had delicious gourmet food from so many different restaurants around the city, along with mixed drinks, fun music, and (of course) an art gallery to roam freely during the event.

I saw some girls posing in one of the wings of the museum and asked to take a few photos of them. It lead to a somewhat spontaneous photo shoot. Here's a peak from last Friday:

James & Carrie's Wedding

Last night was a very unique and special evening that I feel so lucky to have been a part of. James' father, Jim, has worked with my mother for nearly 10 years now. He and his wife have become so special to my family, so when I was asked to photograph his son's wedding, I was thrilled to do the honor.

When I walked into the Country Club, everyone was gathered around, socializing, laughing, and generally having a great time. The intimate ceremony of not more than 30 people also included James & Carrie's newborn son's baptism ceremony.

James and Carrie took a few photographs together following the ceremony, and then joined their guests at an enormous and elegantly set dinner table. Some incredibly hilarious moments were shared around the table over an absolutely incredible meal. I got to know the entire family and their friends throughout the evening, and honestly didn't want to leave.

It's a good thing I was asked to photograph Jim's daughter's wedding next year!!!

Congratulations to you, James and Carrie!! Many wishes for a happy and loving future together :)

Frank & Mary Jo

Their Wedding Day

Frank and Mary Jo have become such special people to me. I have had the wonderful fortune of being their photographer because of Mary Jo's brother Jay, who is a photographer friend of mine. Just seeing the way that they work together in life is so beautiful and sweet. They inspire me, and bring hope to my heart. I am so lucky to be able to call them friends.

Their day was beautiful, and had so many moments that were so special and also unique to these two people. Their ceremony had this beautiful candlelight moment, much like the tradition in churches at Christmas time, in lieu of a unity candle. Frank and Mary Jo two share a liking for the Muppets, and included Kermit and Miss Piggy in several parts of their day, including the cake topper (which, by the way, adorned the top of their cupcake tree "cake").

The entire day was filled with so much happiness shared by everyone who attended. Here are just a few of the moments from today that I found to be my favorites.

Congratulations, Frank and Mary Jo!! I wish you many years of happiness, love, laughter and realized dreams together :)

Remember that music contest that I had a while back? And remember the last post, when I mentioned that Andrew Belle was one (yes there are multiple, to be revealed in a timely fashion) of the winners? Well, his music is FINALLY up on my website!!

For now, I've chosen a song from his EP, All Those Pretty Lights, called "Signs of Life," and also a song called "Static Waves" (which features Katie Herzig) from Ten Out of Tenn Vol. 3.

Andrew has so much talent, and I cannot wait for you all to hear his forthcoming album that is currently being worked on in the studio - it's from hearing a friend of mine working on this new album that I discovered his work.

I am VERY much looking forward to collaborating with him on our photography project in the very near future :) Stay tuned for the results!!

Sunday, I attended one of the most special, musical and amazing performances I can honestly say that I've ever been privileged to witness. The best part? I got to photograph it as well.

I went to this show because of a performer/artist named Andrew Belle. I first heard Andrew's music while visiting my friend Rob over at Uptown Recording in Chicago. The amount of talent that I heard in Andrew's music from just the raw tracks REALLY impressed me. I sought him and his manager out, and requested the usage of his music on my website (remember that contest I held a while back? Andrew is one of the winning artists. I've simply been waiting to announce this).

Seth, Andrew's manager, greeted me at the show. Both he and Andrew proved to be two of the kindest people I've met in the business so far. I'm so glad that everything has been coming together as far as working with these guys goes.

So - this show at Schuba's: Ten Out of Tenn. Ten artists from Tennessee were formed for this extra special tour; eleven were present. Among them were:

What they did was a rotation on stage. Each singer/songwriter performed one song, and all of the others were the supporting musicians. There was a healthy mix of both men and women performing songs that ranged from mellow to incredibly wild and just plain old happy. These performers looked and felt like family on stage. Twenty songs in all were performed on stage, and then everyone joined the audience in the round for a performance of Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds." I've got to say, I couldn't express how perfect the timing was to hear almost 200 people singing "everything's gonna be alright..."

After the show, I was given the pleasure of mingling with a few of the performers. I even met a few other fabulous new talents in the audience who will be playing around Chicago in the very near future. Stay tuned for photos from their shows!

Corinne and Her Family

Sunday, I had a blast working with Corinne, her husband Joe, and the rest of Corinne's family. I first met Corinne and Joe in Jamaica when I photographed John and Nena's wedding last year :)

Our shoot was actually a lot of fun. The kids were all incredibly well behaved, and we even ended our session together by having the boys all play in the leaves. The weather cooperated beautifully, and the park that Corinne chose for the photo shoot was absolutely perfect.

Meet Jimmy Coston

I was contacted by Nick Coston to help him photograph and shoot a documentary film that he is making on his uncle, James Coston. James was an immigrant turned film industry pioneer in Chicago. Through this documentary, Nick will be telling of his uncle's life, as well as revealing some secrets that it seems the family doesn't yet know...

Eric & Kristin

Their Wedding Day

I met Eric and Kristin through my friend Mara. They've been such a wonderful couple to work with, and I couldn't feel more fortunate that they found me! Their wedding day was absolutely lovely, and filled with emotional and happy moments. Kristin made sure that every last detail of the day was planned for, which made for an even more beautiful day!

The happy couple opted to meet before the ceremony to take photos together, this way there wouldn't be a rushed feeling between the ceremony and reception. Eric and his beautiful bride to be shared a wonderful moment together by the fountain in Adam's Park in Wheaton, IL.

Their beautiful candlelit ceremony at First Baptist Church in Wheaton resulted in many shared tears in the congregation, as Kristin surprised Eric by singing him a song that she wrote for him.

Their reception was held at Cress Creek Country Club in Naperville, IL. Their celebration was the perfect ending to a beautiful day.

Congratulations to you both again! May your future together be filled with endless photographs of beautiful moments shared :)

Sometimes the News Can Be Exciting...

When escaped convict, Robert Maday, got away from two guards, we helicopter folks immediately got a phone call for news footage yesterday. We spent several hours hovering over Arlington Heights with no sign of the fugitive.

Today we received word, in the middle of our morning show, that he had been spotted hijacking a car in Hoffman Estates. We again did quite a bit of hovering over THIS scene.

As exciting as chases can seem, there are a lot of times when you are forced to wait for more information and direction to come your way. This is the bulk of my job with the news helicopter, and can oftentimes challenge one's patience. THANKFULLY, the waiting came to an end when we heard of a bank robbery in Bloomingdale, less than a mile from my home. We spent much time hovering over this area searching along with the FBI, U.S. Marshall, and several teamed up police forces from surrounding areas. We were listening to as many scanner frequencies as possible, and roaming around based on tips we had heard over the air.

We got a tip that he had been in St. Charles, and headed out that direction. No Mayday. Shortly thereafter, the stations agreed that this could go on for hours with no sight of the fugitive. They sent us on our way. We had been flying about 6 hours at that point. Less than a half an hour on the ground later, we were dispatched back up to the air in order to get footage of the freshly captured idiot. He caused a car crash in West Chicago at the intersection of James and Rt. 59.

Almost 12 hours of total flight time later, as well as several vocal cameo appearances on NBC, Fox, and several online live feeds by yours truly, we were all relieved for many reasons (especially being on the ground again for at least a while).

OH! And if you're wondering about the camera shaking - the gyroscopes in my camera have been faulty for some time now. It truly wasn't a reflection on my competence as a camera operator, I assure you.

Jonathan and Jenni were incredibly fun to work with back when we shot their engagement session, and their wedding was no different. Lots of laughs were had, and all kinds of wonderful and unique things about this wedding made it exciting to see. These two even had a lighting designer create a fantastic look for their reception!

The ceremony and reception were both held at Hotel Arista in Naperville, IL. I absoultely loved the contemporary feel of this hotel - it really suited the couple!! Jonathan and Jenni opted to see each other before the ceremony to take photos, and so Jonathan waited with his back turned towards his beautiful bride to be as she walked towards him to greet each other for the first time. It was really a special and beautiful moment!

We headed over to the riverwalk in Naperville to take a few photos, and then made our way back to the hotel for the rest of the day. Everything went by in a flash. Jonathan and Jenni were incredibly happy, as were all of their family and friends.

I hope you both enjoy your mini getaway this week! Congratulations to you both, and many well wishes to you in your new life together!

Melissa first contacted me before I left for New Zealand about a family portrait session. When I returned, we started planning for the shoot. I LOVED her style right when we started talking, and was super excited about the shoot. Her idea was to do a shoot with her family with a sort of a theme, if you will, of 'after the party.'

We headed over to downtown West Chicago on Sunday morning to create this sort of a grungy feel to their photos. Melissa did a fabulous job choosing clothes for everyone to wear! We did have a little difficulty getting all of the children to get into the shoot, but we managed to capture a few winning shots. After the family shots were taken, Melissa changed clothes really quickly to take photos by herself.

I ADORE Chris and Laura. Before their wedding, the three of us became friends. We've already made plans to spend time together again after the wedding. They have been an absolute joy to work with.

Chris and Laura are both incredibly smart, talented, sweet, thoughtful, funny, and caring. They made sure that me and my assistant (Shannon) were taken care of beyond being just their photographer. I've never actually hung out with a bride and a groom before on their wedding day without taking photos of them - these two actually danced with me :) What a riot!

I could go on with so many more compliments on these two wonderful people, but then we'd never get to the photos of their day!

One of the highlights, to me anyway, was that their first dance was a song by one of my all time favorite artists, Tori Amos (Your Cloud). With that smile in mind, here are some of the memories we captured...

My trip absolutely changed my life. I have a brand new outlook on who I am, what I want, and what I will be in this life. My goals have become grander, if that was even possible, my heart has been reborn, and my inspiration for new photographic experiences has been rejuvenated.

I spent these two weeks (well, 12 days after the travel factor) with three absolutely amazing, sweet, kind and caring people (Lee, his girlfriend Krystina, and Ben). They made me forget about everything back in Chicago, and have inspired me to live my life to the fullest, as they've all done in their lives.

I kept a travel journal from this trip, and am still deciding if I want to post it or not. In the meantime, I will post some of my favorite images, along with a link to my facebook photo album on my photography page.

Thank you SO much again Lee, Krystina and Ben! The beauty, adventure, culture and unexpected surprises are things that I will continue to strive for throughout my future adventures in life.

I wasn't going to post anything until I returned to the states from my two week journey, but I HAD to share this one!

Two days ago, I woke up fully anticipating a nearly two hour chopper ride around the southern island in New Zealand. When weather wasn't exactly cooperating, I had to be a bit more creative.

For the record, absolutely nothing was going through my head the entire time other than how beautiful the view was, how cold the air was, and how my ears hurt because I couldn't pop them.

I can't wait to do this again!

This is going to be REALLY hard for me to do, but I will be going dark for the next two weeks. No Facebook, no blackberry, and no blogging. I will be enjoying New Zealand the way it is meant for me to enjoy it - with camera in hand, mind, and spirit (as well as some fabulous experiences and new friendships that will surely be made).

I will be posting when I return. Expect to see a LOT of photos!!

Cobia

Last week, I worked with the guys of Cobia on photos for their album, for publicity, posters - you know... band stuff. The guys were a ton of fun to work with, and even took care of me and my friend/assistant, Chad (we were fed pizza and beer - woohoo!).

The shoot took place at Mike's grandfather's company, where they make steel products for the military, among other clients. We collectively helped create an image that utilized this space that had arced sparks from two metal grinders - very loud, but neat in the end.

I'll be going with the boys when I return from New Zealand to take photos of them at the studio working on their album (www.transientsound.com - soon to be launched; myspace for now) - stay tuned for photos from that!

For now, here are a few of the final images from the session, including some from behind the scenes, as well as some of Chad being my guinea pig :D haha

Last Saturday, I helped my friend Kim Charbonneau create some images for her soon-to-be-launched website. She is just launching her own business which she's named Kim's Kiss 'N' Makeup.

A special thanks to all of the women and kiddos who donated their time for this event. An even more special thanks to Cheryl Uthe and last minute fill in, Trish, for their amazing hair styling work. Well, I've done it again. I've managed to become incredibly fond of my clients and have begun an amazing friendship with them BEFORE the wedding! Chris and Laura are absolutely amazing, fun, sweet, beautiful, and thoughtful people (and that doesn't even begin to describe them).

We headed over to Cantigny park in Winfield, IL to shoot their engagement session and ended up sidetracking in conversation rather than taking pictures on several occasions. Chris shared with me his wealth of knowledge on so many different things, and even introduced a brand new light that I plan on having in hand VERY soon for my photography. I'm SO excited about it!

The three of us went out to dinner afterward - it's as though we'd been friends for ages - I LOVE these two!!!

Congrats Chris and Laura! Thank you SO much for everything yesterday - you made me smile so much! I'll see you at your wedding AND after that too of course!

Their Wedding Day

I met Diana in high school. She and I had the great pleasure of being able to travel to Europe together for two weeks through a school trip - it was such an amazing time! I always remembered her being sweet, funny, and absolutely beautiful. Needless to say, she hasn't changed :)

She and Oscar are such a beautiful couple. Their wedding day was so unique - they even had a mariachi band!! (they were simply amazing!!! I believe their name was Las Mariachis Platas). The ceremony was in both English and Spanish (which I LOVED!!), and was in an absolutely beautiful church. Oscar and Diana even released two doves afterward - it was simply lovely :)

I had a little run in with a crazy dude in the ghetto on the way to the reception - he blew a red light, cut me off, clipped my car, and physically got out at a red light, kicked my car, and then hit my face with his hand while calling me racial slurs and swearing at me. I called the cops and filed a report (got a plate number). I now have to go back to file a damage report, since he did much damage to the front end of my car. Where the heck does all this hate come from???!!!

ANYWAY - back to the lovely day. The mariachi band was at the reception as well. Oscar and Diana can dance!!!! It was so much fun to watch them and their entire family on the dance floor - I should go take some lessons from them!!! :)

Thanks so much for making me a part of your special day you two - I really did have a fantastic day, and hope that these photos bring back beautiful memories throughout your marriage.

Frank and Mary Jo have got to be two of the sweetest people you could ever hope to meet. They have a unique bond, and show an extra amount of care towards one another that I've really never seen. I'm so lucky that they found me to be their photographer, especially since Mary Jo's brother is a very talented photographer (Jay Crihfield - Mary Jo decided she wants her brother to enjoy the day!).

These two have been so supportive of everything I've done, whether it be my career or even my personal life. It's such a blessing to make new friends through doing what I love the most. I cannot wait until their wedding day!

I'm still smiling from this one... and a VERY interesting lesson to teach my fellow single ladies out there - to grab attention, wear attire that is unexpected of your surroundings (in a non-smutty way, of course). I wore a full length pink summer dress, while virtually the entire audience wore black something-er-other... 5 phone numbers were handed to me, with countless other flirtations. Now, granted, I was working and hanging out with some friends who happened to be at the show as well, so needless to say this is sheer entertainment value and flattery towards my "ego."

And for some strange reason, I couldn't help but feel as though Brian... er... uh... Marilyn... was looking at me too. I don't know - take a look at the pics and judge for yourself.

Pat and Becky
Their Wedding Day

I cannot even begin to describe this wedding or these two amazing people. I can tell you that I find the word "client" impossible to use when talking about Pat and Becky. They are friends. They've been so supportive, fun, and wonderful since we first met months and months ago. It was no surprise that photographing their wedding day felt as though I was capturing moments for family.

These two compliment each other so perfectly, and are loved by so many people (as was evident by their HUGE bridal party and guest list).

Their special day had a rare comfortable weather day for a July date. The perfect blue sky was filled with puffy clouds everywhere you looked. The wind helped cool the heat from the sun. The short downpour before dinner created a rainbow; something I will likely always associate with Pat and Becky.

A few things that I REALLY wanted to mention about their day... Becky's flowers were AMAZING. I failed to inquire about her florist, but will certainly post something about it later on. I've never seen a bouquet like hers before, or flowers as unique as those on each of the tables.

The band that they hired for the big day was incredibly talented, and played fantastic music that is very much atypical to weddings (yet incredibly fun, and "dance-able"). Their name is Southbound, and they hail from Milwaukee. They played lots of classic rock (one of my absolute favorite genres), and really created a fun mood. Between sets, the on site dj over at CD+Me (the venue) did a phenomenal job in his selection of music.

The videographer. I heart him. Shawn owns a company called Poetry In Motion. He is absolutely a pleasure to work with, and fantastic at what he does. While everyone was busy eating dinner, he was an editing machine. He created a video montage from the whole wedding day that was fun, sweet, and even got a few tears going among the guests. If I were a bride to be, he'd be one of the first people I'd contact (no joke).

Pat and Becky - you are truly amazing and wonderful people. I cannot tell you how incredibly blessed I feel to have met you, captured your special day, and gained two wonderful friends out of it all. Thank you for all you've done for me. Can't wait to see pictures from your amazing honeymoon!

Goodbye (for real this time) my little Miu ...

Today was a bittersweet day filled with so much emotion. After months filled with medical problems, worries, tears, and piling bills, I made arrangements with Miu's breeder to bring him back for more specialized care.

Henry, the breeder, was kind enough to give me a sweet little girl kitten in return. She has a clean bill of health from what we can tell, and is only about a month and a half younger than Miu was (allowing me to skip the kitten stage).

I've named her Leala, a french name for loyal and faithful.

She has her own personality, and yet has many of the same traits that little Miu had.

I am so thankful that I have the photos of Miu to always remember him and how he helped me through such a rough time in my life. I only wish that I had been able to cure him of his illness... and that he could have stayed with me. I already miss him terribly.

Little Leala is a joy to have around so far, and will no doubt help heal my broken heart from all of this. So without further ado, here she is:

I am still smiling from all the fun that we had shooting some photos together yesterday morning! Jami and her daughter were so adorable, sweet and fun to work with!

We started off with a bit of a tea party at the house. Sydney changed outfits to go play on the swings at the park across the street, where she let her mommy put her hair in pigtails (because daddy LOVES Sydney in pigtails - I have to agree). Sydney even got to swing on the 'big girl swing' for the first time.

We walked back home, and Sydney insisted that both her mom and I hold her hand while she swung - I managed to capture a photo of that, which I LOVE :) Sydney then showed off a piece of "rock art" in front of the family's home.

Because Sydney was such a good girl, she got rewarded with some chocolate milk - what a lucky girl!!

I can't wait to see Jami and Sydney again! Next time, there will be a newborn baby (and possibly daddy) too!

Thanks SO much for asking me to come out, Jami - it was such a wonderful way to start my day!

Anthony & Christina

Saturday, my assistant Nena and I drove down to Champaign, IL to photograph Anthony and Christina's beautiful wedding. Christina's maid of honor, Ashley (an old friend of mine from high school), told her about my photography - I am so glad that she did. This amazing couple were so fun to work with!

Anthony and Christina had a traditional Greek Orthodox ceremony at the Three Heirarch Church in Champaign. They chose a beautiful garden for their photos (the arboretum/Japanese House on the U of I campus) just before arriving to their reception at the Refinery.

Thank you so much again for having me capture your beautiful wedding day, Anthony and Christina. Have a fantastic honeymoon in Greece!!! :D

Lucy and I met at my first job out of college... we'll leave it at that! It has been since that time in our lives that we last saw each other, but through the 'miracles' of technology, we've kept in touch (good ol' facebook!).

Lucy is about to go back to London to be with her new husband, to make the story short. Before she left, I wanted to be sure to FINALLY get to do a photo shoot with her, as she is GORGEOUS, sweet, fun, outgoing, and unabashed (and that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of all that is Lucy). We had the most amazing day together yesterday! She even encouraged me to get in front of the camera for a few shots!

Lucy, I cannot thank you enough for brightening up my day and my life. I cannot wait to visit you in London (yay!!!!)!!!

My brother has always been one of my best friends. His two best friends, Dann and Kyle, became brothers to me despite not even being related by blood. As a natural course of things, the boys' wives (Kim, Andrea and Jacqueline, respectively) have become very much like sisters to me. I love them all dearly, and am always comforted and filled with feelings of being welcome, at home, and cheerful when we're all together.
